Dobbs & Co. Building

USA / New Jersey / West New York / Fifth Avenue, 242
 office building  Add category

4-story Queen Anne-style cast-iron office building completed in 1885. The white-painted facade was designed by George Harding, and the building was leased to an antique furniture store, and then to tailors in 1911. It was occupied by Dobbs & Co., an upscale milliner in the 1920's.

The ground floor storefront has been further modernized, with recessed entries to the storefront and upper floors at the ends. The wide expanses of glass on the facade were ahead of their time, possibly owing to the retail use. The 2nd floor has four large windows with transoms, filling almost the entire space and bordered only by the thin white cast-iron piers and spandrels. The 3rd floor has three windows, with the center window divided into two panes, and the end windows having rounded outer corners with decorative panels and a molded crown with ornate fascia. The 4th floors has five round-arched windows with molded architraves.

The building is topped by a large and elaborate triangular pediment with carved details within. It was last renovated in 2015.

The ground floor is occupied by Smile Direct Club.
