Site of the octagonal stadium (Champion's Field) where Tommy Gibbons went 15 rounds against Jack Dempsey on the Fourth of July, 1923. Gibbons was paid 150,000 Dollars for his efforts, and that was a lot of money in those days. Dempsey, having won by unanimous decision, pocketed a great deal more.
For the town of Shelby, the event was a financial disaster. The purpose built wooden arena, intended to hold 40,000, was no more than half full. Even then, only 7,702 spectators had actually paid the price of admission. Shelby's four banks went bankrupt and it was years before the town recovered.
