Old Slip, one of many slips created by the Dutch using landfill, first appears on a map from 1691 and was filled in by 1850. It was from Old Slip that the Betsy, a 90-ton merchant brig captained by Edmund Fanning, sailed in 1792 and became the first ship to fly under the American flag. It is now a tiny park with a round fountain at the south end, and many benches.
