Late Antique Complex (Sofia)

Bulgaria / Sofija grad / Sofia
archaeological site, Roman Empire, historic ruins

An excavated area of archaeological remains in the open space between the Sheraton Hotel and the Presidency. The remains date mostly from the late 3rd and early 4th century, and include the Saint George Rotunda, part of an ancient Roman street with canalization, the foundations of a three-nave basilica, a hypocaust system, and other public and private buildings. In the northwestern corner of the block, concealed beneath the modern Stalinist structures, was found the council chamber (bouleutherion) of ancient Serdica. Some of the structures, like the Saint George Rotunda, remained in use in the Middle Ages.
