Congregation Emunath Israel

USA / New Jersey / West New York / West 23rd Street, 236
 synagogue, 1860s construction

Romanesque/Gothic-revival style church completed in 1860 as the Third Reformed Presbyterian church. It was remodeled by John Correja in 1878, following a fire that gutted the church. The Emunath Israel ("Faith of Israel") Congregation, which was founded in 1865, took over the building in 1920, and converted it into a synagogue.

The congregation made only minor changes; most notably the replacement stained glass windows executed by Isabel Hawxhurst Hall, one of the few female stained glass artists at the time; and later the robust carvings over the entrance doors and granite cladding of the base.

The facade is organized into three bays, with the main entrance at the center - it has three paneled wooden doors below the carved Hebrew inscription, tablet, and lions. The end bays have secondary entrances with glass doors. Above each entrance is a tall stained-glass window ending in a round-arch; the center bay has a larger window. At the roof line the center bay has a large gable, and the end bays have crenelated tops.
