social service department / organization  Add category

5-story building originally completed in 1891 for the Children's Aid Society, and redesigned with new adjoining 7-story structures by Calvert Vaux. In 2012, the organization decided to close, and sell its Sullivan Street properties to developers. The new project has 25 condominium units, and also replaces an older building at the south end of the property.

The original building at No. 221 is still clad in red brick and stone, and maintains most of its original character. A stair-stepped parapet has been added to the peaked roof. To the south, a grey stone recessed section joins to a twin red brick and glass section.
