Villiers Alms Houses (Limerick)

Ireland / Limerick / Limerick
listed building / architectural heritage, almshouses

Villiers Almshouses and schools were endowed by Mrs. Hannah Villiers in her will. In 1826 an Elizabethan style building, designed by the Pain brothers, was erected in the bishop's garden by Mrs. Villiers' trustees, for the benefit of 12 poor Protestant widows. The building has been modernised but is substantially unchanged. The garden wall in front of the houses is part of the old city wall.

  • This is now an establishment for old/retired people. Each person gets their own flat with kitchen, lving room and en-suite bathroom with shower. The gardens are prestine condition and the residents meet up most days for card games, day trips and excursions and they even had a christmas show last year. This is an ideal place for old people to make new friends so it takes away the lonliness of old age. It is maintained by a caretaker and there are personal alarms in every room and security is second to none.
