Vestry Place

USA / New Jersey / Hoboken / Hudson Street, 181
 condominium, 1909_construction

8-story residential building completed in 1909 as a warehouse for the Parke-Davis pharmaceutical company. It has a 2-story white stone base, with the upper floors clad in buff-colored brick. A grey stone cornice separate the base from the upper floors, and another from the granite watertable. The main entrances on both Vestry and Hudson Streets are set atop small stoops, and have a pair of narrow pilasters with scrolled brackets supporting an entablature with a peaked pediment (painted grey on Vestry and white on Hudson). The windows are grouped in pairs, with joined stone sills at each pair. The building is capped by a projecting copper roof cornice with modillions, just above a decorative brick string course with diamond-shaped ornament above each pier. The exposed western elevation is clad in red brick, with the same style of windows as the main facades. It was used in the 1960s for the new home of El Diario‐La Prensa newspaper. The building was converted to condominiums with 24 units in 1984.
