151 West Broadway

office building, Italianate style (architecture), 1891_construction

7-story Italianate office building completed in 1891. Designed by Samuel A. Warnerm, the building was originally an addition to H.B. Claflin & Co.'s mammoth wholesale dry goods store which occupied almost the entire block bounded by West Broadway, Worth Street, Church Street, and Thomas Street at the turn of the century. (The older portion of the Claflin store was demolished in 1926.) Above the 2-story base, the West Broadway facade is faced in Dorchester stone and has nine square-headed window openings at each floor. Stone quoins line the corner facing the intersection, and a center section of windows that have larger triangular and rounded pediments than the surrounding windows. A large triangular pediment tops the bracketed roof cornice. On the Thomas Street side, a triangular pediment tops the entrance. The New York State Supreme Court now occupies the building.
