 condominium, interesting place

7-story Neo-Renaissance residential building originally completed in 1918 as a hospital. Designed by Adolph Mertin, it was known as the Volunteer Hospital. The ground floor has been preserved and adaptively reused whilst the remainder was completely renovated and a new addition designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, wrapping around the north and west sides, was completed in 1983 as a new condominium building. On the original structure, the base is of rusticated limestone with round-arched windows and square-headed doorways, although there is one square-headed double-window on the east facade. The southeast corner contains the main entrance, recessed behind a very thick corner pier. The next five floors are faced in pale yellow brick, contrasting with the limestone trim at the top story which defines square brick panels. The south facade is divided into seven bays of windows with stone sills and lintels, while the east elevation has four bays of single windows on either side of a double-windowed center bay. A projecting dentiled cornice crowns the building.

The newer portion is clad in red brick, and rises six floors, with a circular tower at the intersection of Pearl & Beekman Streets. On the west end is a 2-story arcade with large, squared brick piers on white stone plinths. The spandrels behind the arcade, as well as the spandrels and pilasters within the main bays on Pearl Street are faced in smooth-stucco painted a salmon color. Above the 2nd floor are regular, square-headed, multi-paned windows with stone sills, and single square windows on the 6th floor. The 3rd-5th floors have open corners at the northwest and southwest, with wrap-around windows. In the center of the 6th floor on the west elevation is a single, larger multi-paned window. On the roof of the addition are landscape terraces for the penthouses on the top floor of the older building section.

It contains 30 condominium units with two penthouses that have private terraces.
