Add category
5-story residential building originally completed as four separate structures, all between about 1880-1895. They were used for a variety of purposes, including light manufacturing, stores, offices and storage before being joined internally as apartments and undergoing some exterior remodeling in the early-mid 1900s.
On Liberty Street, the building appears as two facades, with a unified 2-story base of black stone that has storefronts on the ground level and large show windows on the 2nd floor. The upper floors are faced in tan smooth stucco. The facade on the right has three bays of shallow segmental-arched windows with footed sills, while on the left, there are three bays of slightly higher-positioned windows - square-headed, and set within slightly-recessed triple-height arches. A dentiled roof cornice still exists at the right half this elevation. The ground floor is occupied by Essex World Cafe, International Hair Cutters, and Ho Yip Chinese Restaurant.
On the wider Cedar Street elevation, the two facades were altered to match, except that the west section (consisting of one double-window bay and one single-window bay) is only four stories, while the right portion (with a central single-window bay flanked by double-bays) rises five floors. The ground floor is clad in dark-grey and black stone and tiles, with two restaurant storefronts. The upper floors are clad in white brick. The windows have black stone sills and the double windows are separated by black mullions. A simple stone cornice sets of the top floor of the taller right section. Both of the roof lines have identical black projecting cornices with dentils and modillions.
