apartment building, 1875_construction
5-story residential building originally completed as two separate buildings in 1875. In 2017 the joined buildings were given a new unified facade on the east side facing the avenue. It is clad in orange-red-painted brick above ground-floor storefronts of metal and glass. There are two small storefronts on the north side, and a larger one at the south. The entrance to the upper floors is at the west end on 57th Street, atop a stoop with stone steps, brick risers, and iron railings. The metal-and-glass door and sidelight have a transom and grey-stone surround, topped by a tall, tan stone lintel.
The upper floors on the south facade have three bays of single-windows in the middle and a matching end bay on each side. They have red-painted stone sills and flat lintels. Two of the middle windows on the top floor have been shortened, with the sills raised. The east facade on the avenue has four bays of single-windows at both halves, with unpainted stone sills. The north half of the facade is crowned by a black metal roof cornice with console brackets and panels. The rear, west-facing facade is clad in white-washed brick with eight bays of single-windows. A black metal fire escape with wide landings runs down this facade. The ground floor is occupied by Abbey Road Wine & Spirits, Cozumel Tortilla restaurant, and Bagel Market.
