office building, commercial building
295-foot, 25-story Art-Deco office building completed in 1928. Designed by George & Edward Blum, it is clad in buff-colored brick above a 4-story base of glass curtain-wall with white stone end piers (lower three floors) and limestone (4th floor). The ground floor is lined with metal-and-glass storefronts on both main facades, and the main entrance was moved in 2019 to the north end of the west facade on Broadway. It has a glass-and-bronze revolving door and traditional door.
The 2nd & 3rd floors have four bays on the west facade, each with double-windows. The northern two have narrower end panes framing the double-windows, and the southern two have a narrow pane at each end, framing the pair together. The upper floors have six bays of single-windows, with the limestone of the 4th floor extending onto the base of the piers at the 5th, where it transitions to brick. These piers each have two vertical grooves in the brickwork. Between the floors each bay has a spandrel of ribbed brick.
On the south facade on 57th Street, the base has five bays, each one flanked by narrow end panes around the double-windows. The upper floors have nine bays of single-windows. Two of the 5th-floor windows have stone surrounds with a zig-zag inner molding.
At the top floors of the south facade, the west bay and eastern four bays set back above the 18th floor, where the piers are capped in stone. At the four remaining bays, the outer two setback above the 19th floor and the middle two above the 20th. On the west facade there are setbacks above the 19th & 21st floors, and the smaller top floors are set at an angle to follow the regular street grid instead of the slant of Broadway like the rest of the west facade. The top floor is crowned by a sloped, green-patina copper roof. The bottom floors house more space for the Nordstrom department store.
