Originally known as Stables, home of the Gulf Lumber Company of St. Louis.
In late 1917 a group of utopian socialists from Llano del Rio Co-operative Colony in California resettled here, the land having been cleared by Gulf Lumber. The 200 or so newcomers renamed the community New Llano. This experiment in communal living did quite well in the 1920s, but was hard hit by the Great Depression and came to an end in 1939.
