Wheeler Park was the location of Oklahoma City's original zoo, founded in 1902. Land for the park was donated to the city by James B. Wheeler, the park's namesake, and the zoo established with a single white-tail deer (now the official state gaming mammal). Over the years, more animals were donated, and due to flooding along the North Canadian River (now the Oklahoma River), the zoo was relocated in 1920 to Lincoln Park in what is now known as the Adventure District.
Today Wheeler Park sits on 43 acres and is the home of several athletic fields, including Eggeling Stadium used by the Classen School of Arts and Sciences softball team. The park has also been targeted as a site for possible redevelopment by the city's aggressive Core To Shore Plan.
