Built in 1955 to support the construction of the BAR-3 DEW Line site, the Tuktoyaktuk/James Gruben Airport quickly became a major transportation hub not only for freight and passenger movements on the DEW Line but also for the community of Tuktoyaktuk. Returned to the ownership of the Government of the Northwest Territories following the closure of the DEW Line station in September of 1993, the airport is now a fully civilian facility with scheduled passenger service as well as charter freight and passenger flights. The airport is also a designated airport of entry by NAV CANADA.
