The airport sits in the middle of a large empty valley on arctic tundra. This valley was once occupied by an enormous glacier that spanned from Atigun flowing northward. Today, small puddles of water here and there and a few lakes (such as Galbraith Lake nearby) are all that remains of that mighty glacier. There is an ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) administrative office (cabin) at the airport.
