6-story theater completed in 2002. Designed by Mitchell Kurtz, the facade is clad in warm yellow-tan stone, with a slightly-angled swath of grey metal and glass at the east side of the 2nd-5th floors. At the ground floor a round metal column support the projecting angle of the glass-and-metal section above, with glass-and-metal entrance doors. On the right there is a metal service door and glass playbill case. Large lettering across the top of the ground floor spells out "PLAYWRIGHTS" in yellow and "HORIZONS" in orange. At the west end, beginning behind the lettering, a vertical, angled band extends up to the 3rd floor; it gradates from orange at the east to yellow at the west, and "PLAYWRIGHTS" is written on the narrow side panel on the east end. The west part of the stone facade extends straight up to the roof line, while the east side has a recessed band of windows at the 6th floor, above the projecting, angled section, and has a lower roof line than the west section.
Playwrights Horizons is a not-for-profit Off-Broadway, founded in 1971 at the Clark Center Y by Robert Moss, before moving to 42nd Street where it has been instrumental in the revitalization of Theater Row. The current building was built on the site of a former burlesque. The new building includes two theaters - the main stage, which seats 198, and the Peter Jay Sharp stage, seating 128. The administrative floor is sandwiched between the two theaters, serving as a sound barrier as well as bringing the administrative staff closer to the actual productions.
