 post office  Add category

4-story post office completed in 1951. Designed by Frank S Parker Associates, it is clad in beige brick on both the north and south facades. The main entrance is on 42nd Street, at the center, with two separate doorways separated by a brick pier. The entrances are fronted by a concrete wall, with steps to the right and a ramp down to the left. There are two bays of windows to the east, and a metal service door at the far east end. To the west is one bay of windows, a shortly-projecting blank brick section with metal louvers at the top, and another service door. A stone band course caps most of the ground floor.

The upper floors on the north facade have four main bays (five panes wide in the middle two, and four panes wide in the outer bays), with an additional narrow bay of single-windows at the west end; the windows all have simple stone sills. At the east end, the facade ends above the ground-floor service entrance, leaving a narrow gap for light to the neighboring McGraw-Hill Building. The east elevation of the post office is clad in red brick.

The south facade on 41st Street has a garage door with roll-down metal gate at the west end of the ground floor. To the right is a small service entrance, another shortly-projecting blank wall with metal louvers at the top, a wide window bay, and three service entrances at the east end. The upper floors have three bays of 6-pane windows from the west, with a bay of double-windows and a bay of single-windows at the east end.
