The hot shot furnace is a masonry furnace completed in 1843 and designed to heat cannon balls (shot) to white-hot internal temperatures before passing them up to the battery for firing. The hot shot would be directed onto enemy buildings or vessels constructed of wood, which if hit would almost instantly catch fire.
