Malaysian Consulate & UN Mission

USA / New Jersey / West New York / East 43rd Street, 313
consulate / consular section / consul residence, diplomatic / foreign mission / representation

5-story office building/diplomatic mission completed in 1950. It is clad in red sandstone at the 2-story base, and brick painted a pale light-red on the upper floors. A band of slightly darker sandstone separates the upper floors from the base. The west half of the facade has 12 single-windows (taller at the ground floor), with an entrance at the western two bays of the ground floor. The east half has a blank space (with another entrance, this one double-height), and then five single-windows. The stone across the base at the sidewalk level is also a browner color.

The eastern entrance (accessing the Permanent Mission of Malaysia to the United Nations) is recessed in a 2-story opening behind a set of stone steps and a ramp down to the right. It has glass-and-metal double-doors and sidelights below a wall of glass infill. The doorway is covered by a peaked copper canopy extending out over the sidewalk. The western entrance (accessing the Consulate General of Malaysia) has a smaller set of steps, and glass double-doors below a smaller, triangular-peaked copper canopy. Both canopies have a sunburst design on their fronts, reminiscent of the Malaysian flag. A pair of flagpoles project from the 3rd floor, in the blank space above the east entrance. The roof line at the east half of the facade has a simple metal coping, while the west half has a larger stone band.
