11-story modernist residential building completed in 1941. Designed by Mayer & Whittlesley, an architectural firm that also the same year designed 240 Central Park South directly to the north across a mid-block garden, which features a similar rooftop shape. The facade is clad in light-gray brick, almost symmetrical, with a very striking terraced top.
At the ground floor, the central entrance as well as the bay to the east are clad in black polished granite. The entry has bronze-and-glass doors flanking a revolving door, below a stainless-steel, upturned marquee supported by poles attached to frog sculptures on the façade, a feature repeated on the building to the north. The granite bay to the east has a plate-glass show-window. The rest of the ground floor brick like the upper floors, with a low, grey granite water table. There are storefronts to both sides; those on the east are framed in bronze, and there is a set of metal service doors at the east end. The west end has two storefronts with aluminum framing.
The middle six bays of the facade project out, with the ends recessed. The are two wide bays of tripartite windows in the center, flanked by a narrow double-window bay, and another tripartite window bay that wraps around the end corners of the projecting section. The two eastern end bays have tripartite windows, wider at the inner of these bays. On the west end, there are tripartite windows at the end bay, but the inner part is separated into two bays of double-windows, the inner one very narrow. All of the windows have beige metal framing, and there are large metal air-conditioning vents below many of them.
Beginning at the 5th floor the end bays have recessed balconies fronted by curving glass railings that bow out towards the outer ends. The outer bays next to the west end bay has a string course across the top of the 8th floor, above which the 9th & 10th have tripartite windows instead of double-windows (the narrower bay ends at the 8th floor). The outer bay next to the east end bay also has a string course above the 8th floor. All the outer bays terminate at the 10th floor, creating terraces topped by metal railings.
The corner bays of the center section of the facade have projecting, flat balconies at the 9th floor, also with glass railings. Above, these two bays set back to the level of the outer bays, but continue up to the 11th floor. The double-window bays on the center section have projecting balconies at the corners of the 11th floor, wrapping around the sides of these bays. There is a large rooftop terrace, with a glass railing all the way around.
The building contains 139 rental apartments units. The ground floor is occupied by Essential New York Real Estate, Sip & Co. Cafe, Divine Organic Cleaners, and Think Pink Nails & Spa.
