Bishopstone / Beltinge / Herne Bay Coast Guard Station

United Kingdom / England / Herne Bay /

This is the site of the original coastguard station which looked out between Herne Bay and Reculver.
The site was demolished due to the cliffs falling into the sea.

I hope you like the photograph taken in 1976.

  • I used to play here as a kid....Lots of fun with great views.
  • My mum and dad used to take me and my two sisters on holiday to a caravan site called Glencourt. I have vivid memories of walking past that very coast guard station on the way to Reculver where we used to use the Reculver club. I see the photo was taken in 1976, I would have been 7 then. Thanks for posting the photo, it brings back some lovely memories for me.
  • I grew up in Beltinge and have many memories and remember a few names too. I schooled at Reculver Primary as did my brother. We lived there from 1970 to 1980. The cliffs, the woods and the beach were my playground, particularly around the fairy glen area, loads of trees and small cliffs to climb, oh and clay to get stuck in!! @David Herbert, do you have a sister called Louise?, I'm sure my brother Darron knew a David Herbert...?, we lived on the corner of Fairfax Drive. @Ian Blanthorn, did you live in The Paddocks in Beltinge?, I recall someone who was taller than me with blond hair called Ian, but don't recall a surname. Think I have a few photos from those days, will have a look and post if I find any.
  • Hi Mark, good to hear from you. I left Beltinge in 1978 when I joined the Army and now live in Sydney Australia - Love to hear from you - ian.blanthorn@gmail.com
  • Have been looking for a photo of the old coastguard station for years and this is the first one iv found. Thank you! Have many fond memories of the place as a child as i grew up in Herne Bay. Also trying to find photos which show just how far the cliffs have eroded over past 20 years!
  • A very evocative photograph. My grandparents retired to a bungalow at the unadopted end of nearby Gainsborough drive in the early 60's. I used to spend half term and some school holidays with them. I remember the 'look out' very well, we used to pass it every day when walking the dog. There used to be an old house on the cliff top nearby, on it's own, it's not visible on Google Earth, does anybody know what happened to it?
  • This is no trace whatsoever of where the coastguard station once stood.
