cooperative, apartment building
222-foot, 20-story modernist cooperative-apartment building completed in 1958. Designed by Paul Resnick & Schulman & Solaway, it is clad in very light-grey brick above a 2-story grey granite base. The facade is eight bays wide, with the main entrance in the 3rd bay from the west. It has wood-and-glass double-doors and sidelights, framed in a curved stone molding, beneath a navy-blue canopy extending out over the sidewalk. The other bays have plate-glass storefronts, except for the east end bays, which has a ramp leading down to the underground parking garage. The granite cladding only covers the ground floor at the end bays, which are recessed beginning at the 2nd floor. The middle bays of the 2nd floor have each have three separate single-windows.
On the upper floors every bay has a wide tripartite window above a square, black metal air-conditioning vent. The two middle bays set back above the 14th floor, as well as the inner edges of the next bay on either side, and the outer edges of the bays next to the end bays, with angled sides on the 15th-17th floors. The bays next to the end bays set back again above the 16th floor, and the bays next to the middle bays above the 17th floor; the end bays also set back at these levels, terminating at the 17th floor. The two middle bays have a shallow setback above the 15th floor and another below the top floor, which has angled sides. All of the setbacks have metal railings around the terraces they create. A tall water tower housing clad in brick rises from the center of the roof.
The east elevation is also clad in brick, with a bay of single-windows at the front and rear on most floors, and a bay of smaller bathroom windows near the center, with a couple of extra windows at the 12th floor. The building contains 108 apartments. The ground floor is occupied by Riccardo Maggiore salon, Blank Street Coffee, BLT Steakhouse, and Brigandi Coins & Collectibles.
