First of the "Rathole Tunnels" although technically not part of the Rathole Division.
Length 500 feet. Bypassed in 1930 by the new double track line.

Comments

  • I had two conflicting USGS maps showing this location. The 1918 version showed a long tunnel passing through the wooded area from road to road. The 1984 version showed only a short tunnel passing under Highway 29 / west side. I connected both of these. I know that it isn't right but it should have the actual tunnel somewhere along this length.
  • I found a source giving the 500ft length so I used the 1984 version. Still not sure though.
  • I've read that part of tunnel number one has collapsed in on itself , could that be the reason for the different lengths ?
