"The Manse" Gymnasium (Old Westbury, New York)

USA / New York / Old Westbury / Old Westbury, New York
gym / gymnasium - sports, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, outbuilding

The Whitney Gymnasium is reminiscent of a Tudor lodge or even a ski chalet as part of the original William Collins Whitney estate by George A. Freeman. The central hall--which is identified on the exterior by 3 interconnected, high-pitched roof gables--rises up two stories with a massive brick fireplace and open balconies on the upper floor. This great hall led to exercise rooms, squash courts, and bowling alleys. It is now adaptively reused as a campus building for the New York Institute of Technology.

  • um...I don't know if any of that is acurate...there is a large brick fireplace. Part of this building used to be a small house, used as a recreation house on the Witney Estate. The long thin part and large square section of the building was added in the 80's by NYIT. Today, this building is Midge Karr Hall and it belongs to NYIT. It houses the Interior Design school, as well as various art schools, a large two story gallery space, a theatre, darkroom facilities and computer rooms.
  • When I was attending NYIT, we were told it was a sort of parlour house, with game rooms, pool tables and such. The original building, assuming NYIT didn't demo a section of it, looks too small to be a gymnasium. There is a building on the golf course, not too far away from Midge Karr Hall that has a similar architectural styling to it, if anything, I'd say that was the gym.
