On the site of the present day Liars Bridge and the ramp underneath, till the middle of the 19th century, there was a row of houses that divided the Small Square in two. Underneath the row of houses there was a curved tunnel, lit by three lamps and guarded starting with 1771. This was an access tunnel linking the Lower Town and the Upper Town.
The entry was achieved through a former gate tower (Elisabethtorturm) belonging to the second fortified precinct of the city (13th century), surrounding the current Small Square. It was equipped with a herse and was flanked by wooden stairs. Inside the row of buildings, we mention the existence of 1. The Laubenkirche (Evangelical Church), 2. The vaults under the arches and Kleine Haupt Wacht (The Small Watch/Sentry), 3. The vault/passage of the bread makers, 4. The Waaghaus (City Scale Building) and other commercial premises. Above them was a wooden passage, 5. the house of Baron von Rosenfeld; grounded floor vaulted premises; on the first and second floor was the Academy of Law, 6. The two-storey Jikeli house (with pharmacy), 7. The Milk's footbridge, supported by two tall, powerful vaults (Bogen) on which the barber Kisch house was located (today Liars Bridge).
The two entrances to the tunnel had two guard houses in 1837.
Demolition started in 1848 with a house situated near the Bridge of Lies and the old St Jacob Chapel (17 Huet Sq), with the purpose to widen the entry to Huet Square.
In 1851 the City Magistrate decided to demolish the entire complex of buildings, the deed being accomplished in that year.

In 1494 the Shoemakers Guild builds new headquarters over the tunnel.
In 1733 the Reformed built a wooden church 'Laubenkirche' on the tunnel, towards the Council Tower, named after the portico the building had (the transformation of an older commercial building).
