Madarganj Upazila of Jamalpur district with an area of 225.38 sq km, is bounded by Islampur and Melandaha upazilas on the north, Sarishabari and Sariakandi upazilas on the south, Melandaha and jamalpur sadar upazilas on the east, Sariakandi on the west. Main rivers are Jamuna Jhenai; depression 172 hectares; noted beels are Kharka and Chiradhuna Beel.
Madarganj is located at 24.8917°N 89.7500°E. It has 41,058 household units. Madarganj (Town) consists of 9 wards and 22 mahallas. The area of the town is 6.38 sq km. The town has a population of 28733; male 49.67%, female 50.33%. Density of population is 4504 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 23.7%.
Madarganj thana, now an upazila, was established in 1906. The upazila consists of one municipality, 7 union parishads, 108 mouzas and 123 villages.
As of 1991 Bangladesh census, Population 201995; male 51.52%, female 48.48%; Muslim 98%, Hindu 1.91%, Buddhist 0.01%, Christian 0.01%, and others 0.07%.
Average literacy 17.3%; male 21.9% and female 12.5%. Educational institutions: college 1, secondary school 38, madrasa 33, government primary school 66, non-government primary school 94.
Main occupations Agriculture 46.64%, fishing 1.38%, agricultural labourer 25.72%, wage labourer 2.15%, commerce 10.64%, service 2.81% and others 10.66%
