Residence designed c.1913 in the Victorian Colonial Revival style by William Albert Swasey for Cushing Adams {attorney}. In 1917, the 6,000sqft, 8 bedroom estate with 5 fireplaces and 3400sqft guest cottage was purchased by Jesse J. Ricks along with 5 adjoining acres. Ricks had built and moved to his new large country estate on Stonytown Road by 1927.

After some additions were made, Ricks sold the estate to John Gerdes {attorney, industrialist, capitalist} Gerdes served as a partner of Gerdes, Montgomery & Miller, director of Howes Leather Co., Knapp Brothers (shoe manufacturing), C.F. Mueller Co. (macaroni manufacturing), and Zion Industries. He also served as vice president and treasurer of Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad. Gerdes sold the estate in 1937 to Captain John Matthews, who then bought an adjoining parcel from a neighbor and Gerdes moved to "Cannon Hill"/"Rocky Point" in Laurel Hollow.
