Torpedo Storehouse

USA / California / Albany /
warehouse, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic landmark, 1891_construction

Building 262 was built in 1891 as part of the Army Engineer Torpedo Station, and it is the oldest building on the island. It was built by the renowned architect Ernest Leslie Ransome and is one of America’s earliest examples of reinforced concrete construction. In 1891, the Army began construction of a facility to assemble and store floating mines-which they called torpedoes. These would be placed into the Bay via cable if needed for defense. The Torpedo Station was abandoned in the 1930s and transferred to the US Navy in the 1960s. It now belongs to the City of San Francisco.
