Yerba Buena Island (San Francisco, California)

Spanish for "Good Herb", Yerba Buena Island sits in the San Francisco Bay between San Francisco and Oakland, California. The Yerba Buena Tunnel runs through its center and connects the western and eastern spans of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. It has had several other names over the decades: Sea Bird Island, Wood Island, and Goat Island.

The island is part of District 6 of the City and County of San Francisco. According to the United States Census Bureau, Yerba Buena Island and Treasure Island together have a land area of 2.334 km² (0.901 sq mi) with a total population of 1,453 as of the 2000 census.

  • Admiral Chester Nimitz lived on Yerba Buena Island during the time I was attending the Navy's Class A Radar School, in late 1959- early 1960.
  • I remember Nimitz's wife, Catherine used to swim in the indoor pool on Treasure Island. I used to go over and swim and occasionally see her there at the pool. She like the water very cool, so they kept it at a temperature hardly anyone else could tolerate. She seemed like a nice lady, she would always say "hi" to everyone, including us peons. I was there in 1963/1964.
