It is a flat step on the steep route to the Yumtso La. Geographically its prominent features are a small snow fed lake to its northen end and a Knoll feature an its south. But basically it had a namesake herders hut as on 1962. This area featured in the Operation Leghorn which was thrusted on the 7th infantry brigade . This operation aimed for the capture of the Yumtso La (Covered in the north west by the occupation of the Karpola 2),and concentration in the tseng jong area, to first -'roll down' on the Chinese positions below and along the northen bank of the Namka chu;and second,to provide a base for a sweeping action eastwards over the Thag La ridge to clear off any chinese positions. This was considerd extremely optimistic by the Brigade commander and his COs who had been forced to come up with a this strategy, and was equally opposed by the Divisional and Corps commanders. Ultimately this responsibility was taken away from the Corps commander and a new Corps was made up to oversee this operation by the 10th of October.
