At the direction of the Congress, the Corps of Engineers began a program in the 1950s to replace the 600 foot locks and the wicket dams. At the Falls, the Corps built the new dam in its present form. The dam has 5 huge gates at the upper location and four gates at the lower location. The two sections of gates are connected by a concrete fixed-weir structure which joins the hydroelectric station. Construction of the dam was completed in 1964.
Castellations were cut into the dam north of the upper gates. This was done to allow
water to reach the wetlands (and remove silt from the fossil beds) even in the driest
months when the gates are closed.
