Krishnabai Temple

India / Maharashtra / Mahabaleshwar /
 temple, heritage

This is a very old temple of River Krishna. It is very beautiful and in remains. The temple as a Shivalingam and a beautiful statue of goddess Krishna. There is a kunda as well with Krishna flowing as a very small stream.

The temple looks very old and it is in ruins. It seems that the beautiful carvings on the temple faded with time. There is a saying that this temple belongs to Pandava Era.

The temple overlooks a beautiful valley.

Do visit this temple. Do not disturb or write anything on it. This is a heritage site.

There is a construction outside temple which does looks newer than temple (may be ~300years old) Can anyone throw light on it?

  • We visited this temple. Other temples seem to be maintained. Why not this one? Hoping that adding a link on wikimapia makes it available to wider audience.
  • The view from this temple is absolutely SUPERB and breath taking especially in the rainy seasons. I have personally visited there and is so peaceful. It is maintained by the Archeological Department of Delhi. But.....Sorry to say -it is indeed in a VERY VERY sad state. Local Gram Panchyat or Appointed Care Takers by the Arc.Department do not take proper care and hardly visit the site. I really wished take this is seriouly looked into -as to build this over again is next to impossible this day and age. We should maintain and respect our old heritage. Apparently lots of valuable Murtis and Ancient Stones from which the temple was built are either stolen or damaged -and this should be immediately stopped. Proper Appointed person should take regular care of this one of the most beautiful temple of M'war.
