This is among the last remnants of the Cady Marsh that once covered much of Highland and Munster. In recent times the trail adjoining it has been improved, and the marshy land has been named the Highland Rookery, as it serves as a popular place for herons to nest. It is thus currently a 135-acre nature preserve. Formally, this land is also called the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission (LCRBDC) Natural Area.
