The downtown neighborhood of Highland comprises most of the oldest settlements; a significant exception is Brantwood, which is almost equally old. At the end of the Second World War, Highland consisted of only what is now the Downtown district, Brantwood, the westernmost end of Highland Terrace, a small part of Frog Hollow, and some scattered homes. Its growth exploded over the next four decades.
