The Star Theatre was one of the first institutions of commercial Bengali theatre. The Star, along with The Minerva and The Classic Theatre, were also one of the places where the first motion pictures in Bengal, made by Hira Lala Sen, were screened.

It was erected in the Hatibagan area of North Kolkata in 1888, inspired by legendary Bengali playwrights like Girishchandra Ghosh, Amritalal Bose and DL Roy among others.

Renowned actors like Girish Ghosh, ‘Nati’ Binodini, Sarju Devi, Shishir Bhaduri, Dani Mitra, Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Geeta Dey, Sabitri Chatterjee and Madhabi Mukherjee performed at this famous theatre.

Even Swami Vivekananda had convened a public meeting at the theatre in 1898 to introduce Margaret Nobel, later known as Sister Nivedita. In fact, Sri Ramkrishna and Rabindranath Tagore also sat among the audience of Star Theatre, which was the centrestage of Bengali culture till 1991, when it was completely destroyed by fire.

It was resurrected & finally reopened on 13th October 2004 with a 925-seat capacity and air-conditioned.
