embassy, embassy of the United States of America
The US Government acquired the Palais Blücher, the original building on this site at Pariser Platz, in 1931. Soon after, it was badly damaged in a fire.
Its reconstruction was slowed down by the worsening relations between the US and Nazi Germany and it only finally opened months before the outbreak of WWII in 1939. It remained the American Embassy for two years until December 1941, when America entered the war and the US diplomats were interned. It was gutted in later bombing and in 1957 the East German government tore down the ruins.
Following a lengthy series of negotiations over the Americans' escalating security demands, the Berlin Senate (State Government of Berlin) and the US State Department finally agreed on a concept for the new building in 2002. For security reasons, the surrounding streets had to be moved, so that ordinary traffic would remain at least 25 meters (82 feet) from the new building.
The new building opened on July 4th 2008.
