embassy, embassy of Japan
Built between 1938-1942 to designs by Ludwig Moshammer, the Japanese Embassy sat across from the Italian Embassy at the heart of a planned diplomatic quarter. It was badly damaged in WWII and was not rebuilt until 1987, when it was opened as the Japanese-German Center Berlin, as West Berlin was not the national capital at the time. Following reunification, it was rebuilt again and reopened as the Japanese Embassy.
