Hangar No. 2

Russia / Kamcatka / Nikolskoye /
 military, aircraft hangar

One of the earliest-built hangars on Shemya, this dual-door hangar was designed to accommodate aircraft up to B-29 size as Shemya was prepared to serve as a long-range bomber base for the Allied Invasion of Mainland Japan. Postwar, the hangar was part of Northwest Orient's brief airline operations before reverting to USAF control in the early 1950's.

Reconfigured to serve as the primary hangar and flight quarters for the Shemya-based RC-135S Rivet Ball aircraft, which monitored Soviet ballistic missile testing from December 1961 through its loss during a landing accident in January 1969, the hanger was last used for flight operations as the on-deployment home for US Navy Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE (VQ-1) aircraft, which continued through the mid-1970's. Following the departure of VQ-1 from Shemya, the hangar was converted to accommodation space for airfield and airwing support personnel. Today, the hangar is essentially abandoned and is slated for demolition.
