331-foot, 29-story International-style office building completed in 1959 for the Lorillard Tobacco Company. Designed by Emery Roth & Sons, it is clad in a curtain wall of dark-blue-grey metal spandrels, dark-tinted glass and aluminum mullions above a ground floor of polished dark-grey granite. The west facade along 3rd Avenue is nine bays wide, with five bays on the south facade and four on the north side. There is a band of white marble across the top of the 4th & 5th bays from the south on the west facade, which are divided by a white marble pier instead of the grey granite between the rest of the bays. The southern of these two bays has the main entrance, with two glass-and-steel revolving doors and a traditional double-door. The other bays along the avenue have plate-glass storefronts; as do the western three bays on the north and south facades. The remaining bay on the north side has a small metal service door and a metal vent, as does the 2nd-from-easternmost bay on the south facade; the easternmost has a loading dock with roll-down metal gate and another service door.
The lower floors of the tower rise up to setbacks at the northwest and southwest corners above the 10th floor. Additional setbacks at the corners and center of each of the three main facades, above the 12th, 15th and 17th floors, and above the 20th floor at the north and south ends, culminate in a narrow rectangular upper tower that rises vertically from the 21st floor to the roof line. A wide row of horizontal black metal vents near the top of the east and west elevations indicates the mechanical level above the top floor.
The southern part of the east elevation, exposed by the courtyard of the neighboring hotel, is clad in dark-grey brick. Above the 6th floor, the south edge is recessed, and has black metal vents at the 8th-9th floors, and windows bands at the other floors, following the setbacks to the upper tower. There are also small bands of windows at the 10th-12th floors at the south edge of the non-recessed part. The northern part of the east elevation, above the small neighboring building, is also clad in dark-grey brick. It has bands of windows across each floor. The ground floor is occupied by Starbucks coffee, Pret A Manger restaurant, OceanFirst Bank, and The Gap apparel.
