From the J. P. Morgan estate c. 1911. Two connected buildings and garage. Octagon shaped structure to the north attributed to living quarters of a Mrs Hunter. Perhaps a cherished employee?

  • Ruth Hunter was an actress. She started out as a child star playing the role of Ellie May in the original Broadway production of Tobacco Road in 1933. She and her husband Philip purchased the Dairyman's cottage, the dairy and three of the 6 wagon sheds(eventally garages)after Morgan Island Estates was formed in 1945 following Morgan's death in 1943.They lived there until 1954. They had a radio programme in the late 40's and early 50's. The "octagon shaped structure" is the actual dairy but no one lived in it until 1984. It had no heat and the tiled walls and floors were exposed.
  • ...continued. Being active in the arts the Hunters allowed it to be used as a gallery for artists to display their works.Whether this was done regularly I do not know. The Hunters re-located to Florida and established a Playhouse Theatre which operates to this day.
