Home of a cloistered order of Roman Catholic nuns

The Blue Chapel is the first U.S. home of the congregation of the Dominican Sisters of the Perpetual Rosary, founded by Father D.M. Santourens, O.P., in Calais, France in 1880. Fr. Santourens along with 4 sisters came to West Hoboken (Union City) in 1888. They recite the Rosary every hour of the night and day, which was inspired by the encyclical letter from Pope Leo XIII. The Blue Chapel gets its name for the color of the stone that was used to build the monastery. It was built in the early 1900's. The monastery should be given Landmark status as it is the first cloistered community of that order in the United States.
