Interesting feature in the middle of West End Boulevard - A Civil Devense Fallout Shelter built in the 1950's or 1960's. I saw a picture of the inside once, and the caption stated that it looked like a scene from "Dr. Strangelove." I totally agree; it was very a space age, James-Bond-supervillain-lair type place.
During hurricane threats in the 1960s this was to be the hub of Civil Defense response. It is from here former mayor Vic Schiro, when interviewed for television wearing his Civil Defense hardhat, told viewers not to believe any false rumors unless they came from him.
