  That big pit with the green water was the place where many tons of red and gray rock were quarried from, in the 1950's and 60's. I remember as a kid back then there was a constant stream of gravel trucks coming [to and from] Los Trancos Road onto Alpine Road. This quarry supplied the rock materials for many construction, grading, and paving projects, probably including the Highway 85 and early stages of Highway 280 project being built back then, too. The water level in that pit, from what I know, is the water table. There's well water to be found in the region by just drilling down a couple of hundred feet.
