Telephone House is a large office and telephone exchange building. It houses the Central Telephone Exchange, which transferred from 17-19 Newhall Street to this building in 1936. This exchange serves the northern area of Birmingham City Centre. Central was converted to automatic operation on 19/03/1932 and has had STD dialling since July 1961.
A post office was located on the ground floor, addressed 106 Newhall Street.
To the southwest of the building is one of the shafts to the underground Anchor Exchange, built during the Cold War to protect communication systems in the event of an attack.
