This Soo Line Railroad station was built in 1891 in the southeast quarter of section 5-135-54, Shenford Township and by the next year had absorbed much of the pioneer settlement of Shenford, four miles to the south. The post office was transferred here January 21, 1892 from Shenford, with railroad agent Denis C. Cullen becoming the Postmaster. A Soo Line Railroad official's wife selected the name from the famous medieval Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Anselm. Anselm is a Teutonic name meaning divine protector. The elevation is 1085, and the peak population of 50 was reached in 1921. The post office closed June 30, 1942 with mail to Sheldon. The current population of Anselm is 3.
