"Castlegould" was originally designed c. 1902 by Augustus N. Allen in the English Medieval style with structural elements by the Guastavino Tile Co. for Howard Gould {financier}. Gould served as a member of the New York Stock Exchange and the son of Jay Gould. The limestone building was initially modeled to look like Kilkenny Castle in Ireland, on the wishes of his wife Katherine Clemmons. The cut stone was furnished through Barr, Thaw & Fraser Company.

However, upon its completion, she decided she did not approve of it, and Gould proceeded to build "Hempstead House". Unfortunately, they were separated in 1909, before the estate was completed. "Castlegould" became the stable and servants quarters of the new "Hempstead House" estate which was purchased by Daniel Guggenhim in 1917. The former stables are now used as a guest center for the Sands Point Preserve and light event/film production facility.
