residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic remains, Norman (architecture)
Estate home designed c. 1923 in the French Norman style by Polhemus & Coffin and Frederick J. Sterner on originally 90 acres of land for Harry Frank Guggenheim {industrialist, publicist, diplomat}. Guggenheim served as member of the Guggenheim Brothers mining and smelting company and was a founder of "Newsday" alongside Alicia Patterson. He also served as the Ambassador to Cuba during the Hoover administration.
Daniel Guggenheim gave 90 acres of his estate to his son Harry F. Guggenheim as a wedding gift in 1923. Harry and his wife Caroline Morton had built a tile-roofed home in the style of a Norman manor house of tapestry brick which was built by E.W. Howell & Co. of Babylon. Along with his third wife, Alicia Patterson, the two founded the Long Island newspaper 'Newsday' in 1940.
After Harry died in 1971, his house was turned into a museum operated by Nassau County with all of his possessions staying in place to show visitors exactly how he lived. The estate is now part of Sands Point Preserve and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Funding is provided by the Guggenheim Foundation for its maintenance.
