St. Giles' Church (Prague)

Czech Republic / Prag / Prague / Husova, 8
Baroque (architecture), Gothic (architecture), interesting place, listed building / architectural heritage, Roman Catholic church, 14th century construction

Originally Romanesque church with the chapter, first mentioned in the year 1238.
Today's Gothic church, rectangular triple nave without presbytery and two towers on the west, built by Bishop Jan of Dražice and Archbishop Arnost of Pardubice (their coats of arms on the facade) in 1310-1371.
The exterior largely still retained the gothic style church (broken windows, buttresses, the portal in the south aisle).
The church burned down in 1432, but was immediately repaired.
From that time dates the characteristic silhouette of the today's cathedral, but the North Tower was not completed in its original form. Hence the characteristic silhouette of the current church.
The emblem of the dog with a flaming torch in its mouth is over the entrance on the south side of the church.
